About HDFC Bank

Incorporated in 1994, HDFC Bank is the largest commercial bank in India and it has become one among the top five banks in the world by market capitalisation after its acquisition of parent company in April 2022. It has been identified as a domestic systemically important bank (D-SIB) by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).

HDFC Bank Ltd had a market capitalisation of more than ₹12.53 lakh crore as of December 12, 2023. The HDFC Bank stock price has appreciated more than 19% in the last three years.

Under the RBI’s policy for liberalisation of the banking sector, the Housing Development Finance Corporation Ltd received an “in principle” approval for setting up a bank. Following RBI nod, HDFC Bank came into existence in August 1994, with its registered office in Mumbai, and commenced operations as a scheduled commercial bank from January 1995.

On April 4, 2022, the merger of India’s largest housing finance firm HDFC Ltd and HDFC Bank led to the creation of a financial sector giant.

HDFC Bank’s distribution network included 7,945 branches and 18,183 ATMs in 2,488 cities and towns, as of September 30, 2023.

The bank’s international presence includes branches in 4 countries and 3 representative offices in Dubai, London and Singapore which offer home loan products to Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) and Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs).

Over the years HDFC Bank has also diversified into various financial sectors like insurance, mutual funds, asset management and capital market instruments, through its subsidiaries. Its major subsidiaries include HDB Financial Services Limited, HDFC Life Insurance Company Ltd, HDFC ERGO General Insurance Company Ltd, HDFC Asset Management Company Ltd and HDFC Securities Ltd.

Business segments of HDFC Bank

Wholesale banking:

HDFC Bank offers services to large corporations, financial institutions and government entities. Its wholesale banking unit comprises corporate loans, investment banking, treasury services and cash management solutions.

Government and institutional business:

The bank offers services to government entities, public sector undertakings and other institutions. The offerings include payroll services, cash management, tax collection and payments and social security payments.

Retail banking:

The bank serves millions through its products such as savings accounts, current accounts, fixed deposits, loans, credit cards and payment solutions.

Private banking:

High-net-worth individuals are provided help in portfolio management, investment advisory and estate planning through this division.

Payment solutions:

HDFC offers services like online banking, mobile banking, debit/credit cards, prepaid cards and payment gateway solutions.

NRI services:

Under NRI services, the bank offers a host of NRI accounts like savings, current, salary and fixed deposit accounts.
