SUMMARY

The Income Tax Return (ITR) filing due date for AY 2025-26 has been extended. CBDT today announced the ITR filing deadline extension for filing of returns, which are due by July 31, 2025, to September 15, 2025.

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has extended the due date of filing of Income Tax Return (ITR) from July 31, 2025, to September 15, 2025.

Salaried individuals and other taxpayers who are not required to have their accounts audited will be able to file their income tax return for Financial Year 2024-25 (Assessment Year 2025-26) until September 15.

"CBDT has decided to extend the due date of filing of ITRs, which are due for filing by 31st July 2025, to 15th September 2025," the Income Tax Department said on May 27, 2025.

"This extension will provide more time due to significant revisions in ITR forms, system development needs, and TDS credit reflections. This ensures a smoother and more accurate filing experience for everyone. Formal notification will follow," it added.

Earlier, it was expected that the CBDT may extend the due date as updated e-filing utilities are not yet available on the Income Tax portal. Last year, a number of these utilities were available from April.

However, the CBDT has notified all the ITR forms that will be used for filing ITR for AY 2025-26 (FY 2024-25).

Why has the due date been extended?

The ITR filing due date for AY 2025-26 has been extended to incorporate various changes effected by Budget 2024. This year, the income tax forms have several changes that have necessitated extra time for a smooth ITR filing experience.

"The notified ITRs for AY 2025-26 have undergone structural and content revisions aimed at simplifying compliance, enhancing transparency, and enabling accurate reporting. These changes have necessitated additional time for system development, integration, and testing of the corresponding utilities," CBDT said.

The CBDT further said that TDS statements for the due date falling on May 31, 2025 would start reflecting in early June. Without the due date extension, taxpayers would have been left with a very small window for ITR filing till July 31, 2025. Therefore, the due date has been extended.

"Furthermore, credits arising from TDS statements, due for filing by 31st May 2025, are expected to begin reflecting in early June, limiting the effective window for return filing in the absence of such extension," CBDT said.

The Income Tax Department further said that the due date extension is expected to mitigate the concerns raised by stakeholders and provide adequate time for compliance.
