The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has notified ITR-V and ITR-6 for AY 2025-26 (FY 2024-25). Earlier, the Board had notified ITR-1, ITR-2, ITR-3, ITR-4, and ITR-5. The CBDT is yet to notify the last ITR form, i.e., ITR-7.

All these forms cater to different types of taxpayers and purposes.

You can read about other forms released till now here. This article will help you understand how ITR-V and ITR-6 differ from other tax return forms and what purpose they serve.

ITR-6

The CBDT notified ITR-6 through a gazette notification dated May 6, 2025. This form is applicable for companies that are not required to file returns in ITR-7.

For the current assessment year, the CBDT has introduced the following changes in ITR-6:

  • Schedule-Capital Gain split for gains before and after 23.07.2024 (post changes in Finance Act, 2024)

  • Capital loss on share buyback allowed if corresponding dividend income is shown as income from other sources (post 01.10.2024)

  • Reference of section 44BBC (cruise biz) added

  • Schedule BP changes (Rule 10TIA): Profits from sale of raw diamonds shall be 4% or more of gross receipts.

  • Changes made to capture deductions claimed u/s 24(b).

  • TDS section code to be reported in Schedule-TDS

ITR-V

While ITR-1 to ITR-7 are used for income tax return filing, ITR-V is a tax verification form that may be used if you have already filed your return and it has not been processed. You need to sign the ITR-V and send it to the tax department's Central Processing Centre (CPC) in Bengaluru via speed post within 30 days of ITR filing.

However, you can avoid the trouble of sending ITR-V by electronically verifying your tax return on the e-filing website itself.

The income tax return process is not complete until you verify, which can be done both online or offline by sending ITR-V to CPC. The CBDT also says this in instructions for ITR-V for AY 2025-26: "Please e-verify the electronically transmitted return data using Aadhaar OTP or Login to e-Filing account through Net-Banking login or EVC generated using Pre-Validated Bank Account/ Demat Account or EVC generated through Bank ATM. Alternately, you may send the duly signed (preferably in blue ink) Form ITR-V to “Centralized Processing Centre, Income Tax Department, Bengaluru 560500”, by SPEED POST ONLY."

The due date to file ITR for AY 2025-26 is July 31, 2025 for non-audit cases.
