A viral WhatsApp message has falsely claimed ATMs in India will be closed for 2-3 days due to ‘ransomware cyber-attack’ and warned users not to open any video called the ‘Dance of the Hillary’ as it contains a virus.
PIB Fact Check on Friday (May 9, 2025) said in a post on X that ATMs will be working as usual, and the message was fake. It further asked readers to refrain from sharing unverified messages.
Amid a trail of misinformation on the internet due to escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, it is important to only rely on trustworthy sources that fact-check before reporting anything. It is highly advisable to verify everything you read on the internet, especially on social media platforms, before believing and spreading it to your friends and family members.
Several banks, including the State Bank of India and the Punjab National Bank, on Friday announced that their ATMs are fully functional, well-stocked, and that digital services are working smoothly.
The announcement came as many social media posts falsely claimed that banks and ATMs are likely to be shut in the coming days.
"All our ATMs, CDMs/ADWMs and digital services are fully operational and available for public use," India's largest bank, State Bank of India, said in a social media post on X. India's largest lender also advised its customers not to rely on unverified information.
Bank of Baroda, Punjab and Sindh Bank, Canara Bank and Bank of India posted similar messages to spread awareness among the users.
"All our digital services too are operating smoothly, ensuring a seamless banking experience from the comfort of your home," Punjab National Bank said in a post on the social media platform X.
Meanwhile, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will hold a review meeting on cybersecurity preparedness of banks and financial institutions in the evening, the ministry said.
