Stock market today: A healthy buying in most sectors helped benchmark equity indices to settle in positive territory for the sixth straight session on Tuesday, April 22.

At close, the S&P BSE SENSEX stood at 79,595.59, up 187.09 points, or 0.24%, while the NSE's NIFTY50 index settled at 24,167.25, up 41.70 points, or 0.17%.

Banking stocks continued their climb for the sixth session. The latest factor behind a surge in banking stocks is the relaxed liquidity coverage ratio (LCR) norms for the banks.

In a welcome move for banks, the RBI has toned down its earlier proposal on liquidity norms, announcing that retail deposits accessed via internet and mobile banking will attract an additional run-off factor of only 2.5%, instead of the steeper 5% initially suggested in last year’s draft guidelines.
