The Indian equity benchmarks resumed their downward journey after a day's pause in the previous session on Wednesday, April 9, The SENSEX fell as much as 554 points and NIFTY50 index touched an intraday low of 22,353.25 mirroring losses in global markets after tariffs announced by US President Donald trump came into effect from Wednesday midnight. The SENSEX ended 379.93 points or 0.51% lower at 73,847.15 and NIFTY50 index declined 136.70 points or 0.61% to close at 22,399.15 dragged down by losses in Larsen & Toubro, State Bank of India, Infosys, Tata Consultancy Services and Axis Bank.
As many as 32 shares in the NIFTY50 index ended lower while 18 ended higher. Wipro was top loser in the NIFTY50 index, the stock fell 4.23% to close at ₹236.80. State Bank of India (-3.40%), Tech Mahindra (-3.31%), Larsen & Toubro (-3.13%) and Trent (-2.97%) were also among the losers.
On the flipside, Nestle India was top gainer in the NIFTY50 index. The stock rose 3.28% to close at ₹2,350 mirroring positive trend in FMCG shares after the Reserve Bank of India lowered inflation target for the current financial year.
Hindustan Unilever (2.61%), Titan (1.81%), Power Grid (1.78%) and Tata Consumer Products (1.66%) were also among the gainers.
NIFTY Midcap 100 index ended 0.51% or 255.95 points lower at 49,582.05. As many as 61 shares in the NIFTY Midcap 100 index ended lower while 39 closed higher. Muthoot Finance was top loser in the NIFTY Midcap 100 index. The stock dropped 6.78% to close at ₹2,137 after Governor Sanjay Malhotra said the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) will soon issue guidelines on gold loans. The guidelines for co-lending will now be extended to all the regulated entities.
Following this, shares of Muthoot Finance, which has a gold portfolio of 50%, tanked 10%. Shares of Manappuram Finance and IIFL Finance also tanked 2.21% and 4.75%, respectively, on the National Stock Exchange.
Biocon fell 5.18% after reports suggested that US will impose tariffs on pharmaceutical imports going ahead. Phoenix Mills (-5.04%), Persistent Systems (-4.69%) and Glenmark (-4.50%) were also among the losers.
On the flipside, Max Healthcare was top gainer in the NIFTY Midcap 100 index. The stock rose 4.06% to close at ₹1,117. Max Financial Services (3.10%), HPCL (2.75%), Colgate Palmolive (2.71%) and HUDCO (2.68%) were also among the gainers.
NIFTY Smallcap 100 index fell 0.86% or 132 points to settle at 15,256.75. As many as 64 shares ended lower while 35 ended higher in the NIFTY Smallcap 100 index. Piramal Pharma was top loser in the NIFTY Smallcap 100 index. The stock fell 6.17% to close at ₹207.90. BLS International (-5.87%), Aditya Birla Real Estate (-5.46%), Welspun Living (-5.22%) and Mahanagar Gas (-5.12%) were also among the laggards.
On the other hand, NBCC was top gainer in the NIFTY Smallcap 100 index. The stock rose 4.85% to close at ₹87.10 after it informed exchanges that it won work orders worth ₹120.90 crore. Dr Lal Path Labs (4.50%), ITI (4.37%), Navin Fluorine (3.41%) and Godfrey Philips (3.11%) were also among the gainers in the NIFTY Smallcap 100 index.
