The Indian equity benchmarks posted their worst single-day performance since June 4, 2024 as trade tensions, sparked by US President Donald Trump’s tariff announcement, sent investors dumping risk assets across the world. The SENSEX fell as much as 5% in intraday deals before staging partial recovery in the last 30 minutes of trading and NIFTY50 index touched an intraday low of 21,743.65 on the back of a broad-based selloff. The SENSEX ended 2,226.79 points or 2.95% lower at 73,137.90 and NIFTY50 index dropped 743 points or 3.24% to close at 22,161.60.

NIFTY50 top gainers and losers

The selloff in equities was so intense that 48 out of 50 shares in the NIFTY50 index ended lower. Trent was top loser in the NIFTY50 basket of shares. The stock dropped 14.70% to close at ₹4,745 after the company posted weaker-than-expected sales growth in the fourth quarter of the financial year 2024-25. Trent reported a 28% increase in standalone revenue in the latest March quarter to ₹4,334 crore, compared to ₹3,381 crore in the corresponding period previous year. Multinational investment bank Morgan Stanley had estimated 35% revenue growth in the quarter under review.

JSW Steel (-7.53%), Tata Steel (-7.26%), Hindalco (-5.92%) and Tata Motors (-5.34%) were also among the losers.

On the flipside, Hindustan Unilever (0.24%) and Zomato (0.22%) were among the only gainers in the NIFTY50 index.

NIFTY Midcap 100 gainers and losers

NIFTY Midcap 100 index dropped 3.63% or 1,836 points to close at 48,809.45. As many as 96 shares in the 100-share index ended lower. Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders was top loser in the NIFTY Midcap 100 index, the stock dropped 8.39% to close at ₹2,329. NALCO (-7.86%), Godrej Properties (-6.98%), SAIL (-6.94%) and Bharat Forge (-6.56%) were also among the losers.

On the other hand, GMR Airport (1.99%), Kalyan Jewellers (0.80%), Voltas (0.30%) and Persistent Systems (0.28%) were among the notable gainers.

NIFTY Smallcap 100 gainers and losers

NIFTY Smallcap 100 index fell 3.88% or 608 points to close at 15,067.90. A total of 95 shares in the index ended lower. BLS International Services was top loser in the NIFTY Smallcap 100 index, the stock declined 9.26% to close at ₹349.40. Brainbees Solutions (-9.16%), Inox Wind (-8.68%), Anant Raj (-7.66%) and Hindustan Copper (-7.52%) were also among the laggards.

On the flipside, Delhivery was top gainer in the NIFTY Smallcap 100 index, the stock rose 4.08% to close at ₹269 after the company acquired Ecom Express for ₹1,407 crore.

Aegis Logistics (1.70%), Zensar Technologies (1.61%), Crompton Greaves Consumer Electricals (0.49%) and Jupiter Wagons (0.16%) were among the notable gainers.
