The NIFTY Bank index surged to record levels on Monday, April 21, after private lenders HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank released their financial results for the quarter ended March 2025.
The NIFTY Bank climbed 1.66% to ₹55,195.95, its all-time high mark as all components traded in the green.
HDFC Bank stock is up 2% to ₹1,945, while ICICI Bank's share price advanced 1.45% to ₹1,427.1.
Shares of Axis Bank, State Bank of India and IDFC First Bank rose 3.12%, 1.53% and 2.37%, respectively.
The net interest income (NII) climbed 10.3% to ₹32,070 crore in the quarter under review on a slight expansion in the net interest margin (NIM) to 3.5% and the gross advances growth at 5.4%.
Srinivasan Vaidyanathan, chief financial officer of HDFC Bank, said that India's largest private sector bank had consciously taken a call to slow down loan growth and focus on the liabilities piece for the fiscal. He stated that the deposit growth was more than 15%.
On a standalone basis, the lender's profit after tax for the quarter under review came at ₹12,630 crore, up 18% compared to ₹10,708 crore a year back.
The core NII rose 11% to ₹21,193 crore from Q4 FY24's ₹19,093 crore on the back of a 13.3% increase in loans and an advancement in the NIM to 4.41%.
Meanwhile, NIFTY50 skyrocketed 0.77% to cross the 24,000 mark, and SENSEX soared 0.81% to reach 79,196.53.
In the NIFTY pack, TechMahindra, IndusInd Bank, State Bank of India, Axis Bank, Trent, Infosys, JSW Steel, and Power Grid were top gainers.
Adani Port, HDFC Life, ITC, Bharti Airtel, Hindustan Unilever, Nestle India, Tital, Eternal, Maruti, and Tata Consumer Products were laggards.
