The Indian equity market on Tuesday, April 1, was trading over 1.5% lower during the afternoon trades as investors remained jittery ahead of Trump’s tariff announcement on April 2.

At 1:52 PM, BSE S&P BSE SENSEX declined 1,373.03 points, or 1.77%, at the 76,041.89 level, while NSE’s NIFTY50 was at the 23,170.35 level, tanking 349 points, or 1.48%.

HDFC Bank, Sun Pharma, HCL Technologies, Hindalco, and Infosys were the biggest losing scrips on the NIFTY50 index, falling 3.09%.

On the other hand, Trent, IndusInd Bank, HDFC Life, Hero Motor Corp., and Jio Financial Services were the most gaining stocks, rising as much as 4.63% on the 50-share index.

Volume buzzers

On Tuesday, the intraday trading volumes of Bajaj Finserv Mutual Fund—Bajaj Finserv Nifty 50 ETF, Birla Cable, Incredible Industries, HBL Engineering, LIC Mutual Funds—LIC MF G-sec LT ETF, and Hester Biosciences shares surged.

A volume in the stock volume is the number of shares traded in a specific period. A spurt in volume means the stock is witnessing a lot of interest or activity happening around the equity market.

Data from the National Stock Exchange showed that the Birla Cable counter was seeing the highest trading volume. The number of Birla Cable shares that changed hands on Thursday was over 12.24 times higher than the daily average on the stock counter.

Shares of Birla Cable were trading at ₹158.68 apiece, jumping 18.52% on the National Stock Exchange.

Counter of Bajaj Finserv Mutual Fund – Bajaj Finserv Nifty 50 ETF also saw a spurt in volume as it was trading 121.95 times higher than the daily average.

Volumes at the Incredible Industries and HBL Engineering were trading 9.37 and 9.34 times higher than the daily average, respectively. However, the LIC MF – LIC MF G-sec LT ETF counter witnessed 8.30 times higher volume than the daily average.

Further, counters of Hester Biosciences Limited, Atul Auto, and Kotak Nifty PSU Bank ETF were higher by 7.17, 6.37, and 5.37 times than the daily average.

Counters of Punjab & Sind Bank and Sarthak Metals Limited saw 4.71- and 4.22-times higher volume than the daily average, respectively. While volumes at V.S.T Tillers Tractors Limited counters were 4.07 times higher than the daily average.

Indus Tower counter was also trading 3.47 times higher than the daily average after Vodafone Idea said that the government's stake in the company will be more than double to 48.99% as it is set to acquire shares worth ₹36,950 crore in place of outstanding spectrum auction dues.

Shares of Indus Tower were trading 5.73% higher at ₹353.54 apiece on the NSE.
