Bharti Airtel will be in focus on Monday, May 19, after reports suggested the telecom firm and its unit, Bharti Hexacom, filed a new petition in the Supreme Court for a waiver of ₹34,745 crore in adjusted gross revenue (AGR) dues toward interest, penalty, and interest on penalty.
According to The Economic Times report, Bharti Airtel has said the September 1, 2020, judgement (on AGR) has “caused a crippling financial impact across the telecom sector”.

Market investors will also be tracking shares of Vodafone Idea and Bharti Hexacom on Monday post this development.

In the early session, Vodafone Idea shares tumbled 4.75% to ₹7.02 apiece while Bharti Airtel shares were trading 0.22% lower at ₹1,356.40 on the National Stock Exchange. Bharti Hexacom shares were also down 0,62% at ₹1,679.10 apiece.

Meanwhile, Bharti Airtel has clarified that they are not challenging the Supreme Court ruling but only seeking a waiver of the burden of interest and penalty, as well as interest on penalty. According to the ET report, the Bharti companies had said relief on an “equitable basis” is crucial for the survival of all telecom operators.

The petitions by both Vi and Bharti Airtel are listed for hearing on Monday before a bench comprising justices JB Pardiwala and R Mahadevan.

The report further said that while Airtel and Bharti Hexacom have to pay a principal amount of ₹9,235 crore toward AGR dues, interest of ₹21,850 crore, a penalty and interest on the penalty of ₹3,995 crore and ₹8,900 crore, respectively, are also payable.

Further, telecom operator Vodafone Idea told the Telecom Department that without the government's timely support on AGR, it will not be able to operate beyond FY26, as the bank funding discussions will not move forward.

The embattled telco shot off a letter to the Telecom Department on April 17, 2025, making a strong case for a lifeline, saying, "No support will lead to a point of no return."

"Without GoI's (Government of India) timely support on AGR, VIL will not be able to operate beyond FY26 as the bank funding discussions will not move forward," VIL CEO Akshaya Moondra wrote in a letter to the DoT secretary.
